True or false? Debunking the common myths about cleansing oils

True or false? Debunking the common myths about cleansing oils

Cleansing oils have certainly earned their place in the world and for good reason. They can be a valuable addition to anyone’s skincare routine offering a deep cleanse while helping to rebalance stressed skin or hormonal breakouts.

The problem comes in an over-saturated beauty industry, when a new myth forms with each new product created. It can often be hard to figure out what is fantasy and what is fact. Debunking these myths and misconceptions is a game-changer. Not only do you end up learning so much about the beauty industry (we’re always learning and evolving), but it helps you, as a consumer, to figure out what you need for your skin and how best to use the cleansing products you choose.

Here we debunk some of the most common cleansing oil myths. Keep reading - your skin will thank you for it!

#1 Cleansing oils will clog your pores

Let’s dive straight in. Cleansing oils do not clog your pores. However, choosing a high quality cleansing oil will make a difference. High-quality cleansing oils are formulated to be non-comedogenic, which means that they are specially formulated to not clog the skin.

Many cleansing oils also include ingredients such as jojoba oil for extra hydration as the skin is cleansed. In our Rasa Dream Cleanser, we use Safflower and Sunflower oils which are known for their anti-inflammatory properties and high content of linoleic acids, also known as vitamin F. Vitamin F, helps strengthen the outermost layers of the skin, keeping the complexion hydrated and calm.

Applying your cleansing oil correctly also makes a difference. Always apply Rasa Dream to dry skin and gently massage in. This helps break down impurities from the night, and makeup or environmental build up from the day. (Honestly, the gentle and sweet aroma of our cleansing oil will only encourage you to elongate your skincare routine each and every day!) Then, simply wash off with warm water or use a damp cloth. Beauty personified.

#2 Cleansing oils can’t be used on oily skin

If you already have oily skin, you can be forgiven for thinking that by using a cleansing oil, your skin will be made more oily. The truth is, using a cleansing oil that suits your skin type is actually very beneficial to your skin. Cleansing oils help to dissolve oil, grabbing onto impurities and excess sebum on the skin’s surface. When used properly, they balance out oil production and the likelihood of breakouts. Rasa Dream not only dissolves impurities, but its key ingredients of rice bran, moringa and black cumin seed oils, also effectively cleanse each pore, keeping the skin supple without drying.

Top tip! Whichever cleansing oil you decide to use, just make sure it's suitable for your skin type and skincare concerns.

#3 Cleansing oils aren’t suitable for acne-prone skin

We understand that feeling of having acneic skin. It feels uncomfortable, tight and oily not to mention the emotional toll it can take. Cleansing oils however, can be an effective and soothing remedy for this skin type. Many cleansing oils, including Rasa Dream, are specifically formulated to be suitable for acne-prone skin and are specially designed to calm, not aggravate the complexion.

But, what makes a cleansing oil even more effective? When it’s formulated with antibacterial properties.

Rasa Dream contains safflower oil and black cumin oil, as well as manjistha, turmeric and licorice, each of which has powerful anti-inflammatory properties. It’s these ingredients that you need to keep an eye out for. Using a gentle acne-friendly cleanser can be an effective way to help reduce acne and hormonal breakouts in the long run without stripping the skin’s natural moisture barrier.

#4 You need to use harsh scrubs to keep the skin clean

This one couldn’t be further from the truth! A cleansing oil and hot cloth will remove dead skin cells and help cellular turnover to promote a soft and supple complexion.

Rasa Dream in particular removes dirt, sunscreen and environmental pollutants - you can even use it to double cleanse, it’s that effective and gentle. Cleansing oils in general also provide great hydration for the skin thanks to their nourishing ingredients. We use a combination of oils and plant extracts, to calm, soothe and strengthen the skin.

If you need a heavier exfoliation once a week, opt for a gentle glycolic acid or if you have acne and bad breakouts, then salicylic acid might be the better option. We always recommend seeing a skincare professional if ever you’re unsure.
